In September this year, Edinburgh is opening its doors, so if you’re looking for things to do in Edinburgh, this could be the perfect time. For a whole weekend, you get to see some of Edinburgh’s most beautiful and most fascinating buildings which would normally be closed to the public. You’ll also be able to visit them free of charge, so if you’re thinking of visiting Edinburgh round this time, then it’s a perfect opportunity to come down and visit some of the places you may never get to see again.
Why would Scotland do this?
Well, it’s a good way of preserving Scotland’s important heritage, giving people plenty of new opportunities to visit buildings which have played such an important part in its history. It’s been put together with the help of some of Scotland’s most important heritage and archaeology trusts, including the Scottish Civic Trust and Archaeology Scotland. The whole thing is supported by Historic Environment Scotland.
The open days have had some really great venues in the past including Mansfield Traquair, The Royal Observatory of Edinburgh and Merchants Hall. With so many venues being open to the public, it’s a perfect opportunity for you to learn about Scotland’s history and if you’re a history buff you’ll love it!
One venue which was included on last year’s Open Day is the John Knox House. This is a house where much drama has unfolded over the years. There are all sorts of tricks and puzzles here, which were created in order to fool any would-be intruders.
The house itself dates back the late 15th century and is one of only two houses dating back to the medieval period along the Royal Mile. It was at this time in history which saw the abdication of Mary, Queen of Scots and the civil war. So, there’s much to discover.
That is just a taster of what you might find should you choose to visit Edinburgh during the Open Day weekend. It’s guaranteed to be a fascinating weekend of historical discovery, a family event for all. So, do spare some time to come down here and explore Edinburgh’s fascinating history.
